The murine B29 gene encodes a cell surface glycoprotein with a single immunoglobulin-like domain (Hermanson et al, 1988). The encoded protein in humans is being referred to as Ig-beta. The human gene has been cloned by Müller et al (1992). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the protein has been given the designation CD79b (Engel and Tedder, 1994).
The gene is expressed specifically in B-cells and is expressed at all stages of B-cell differentiation.
Ig-beta forms disulfide-linked heterodimeric complexes with the protein encoded by the mbl gene, Ig-alpha
