Matrigel is a reconstituted basement membrane that contains components such as collagens, laminin, proteoglycans but also enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix, as well as enzyme inhibitors and growth factors. The primary component of Matrigel, prepared from Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) tumor cells is laminin (Madri et al, 1988; Grant et al, 1985, 1994; for overview see also: Kleinman and Martin, 2005). The formulation is marketed also as Cultrex.
