ATG12 is a protein important for early steps of autophagy (autophagosome formation) in an ubiquitin-like protein conjugation step. ATG12 covalently attaches to the target protein ATG5 (Mizushima et al, 1998, 1998). ATG12 is activated in an ATP-dependent process by ATG7, a ubiquitin-like E1 activating enzyme (Tanida et al, 1999).
