[APUD cell]
acronym for amine and precursor uptake and decarboxylation (see also: apudocytes). A collective term for a diffuse spectrum of endocrine cell types scattered throughout the body. APUD cells constitute a component of a universal diffuse neuroendocrine system (neuroimmunoendocrine system; see also: neuroimmune network) (Polack and Blom, 1986; Sternber, 2000). Histologically, these cells can be identified by their staining behaviour (see: chromaffin, chomophil cells)
These cells are located in the gut, pancreas, urogenital tract, airway epithelium, pineal gland, thyroid gland, adrenals, adenohypophysis and hypothalamus, carotid body, skin, sympathetic ganglia
