The protein recognized by the monoclonal antibody of the same name is a 43-50 kDa protein that may function as a costimulatory molecule for full cell activation of human T-cells. The protein is expressed preferentially on CD4(+) CD45RO(+) T-cells. The cDNA encoding the 4F9 antigen shows that it is identical to R2, a cDNA isolated because of its strong upregulation after T-cell activation (Nojima et al, 1993).
The new designation for this antigen is CD82.
