This cell types constitutes a morphologically distinct type of ganglion cell in the cat retina (Berson et al, 1998). Zeta cellS have a small soma, slender axon, and a compact, tufted, unistratified dendritic arbor. There is no evidence for separate ON-cell and OFF-cell types of zeta cell. Morphology and projection patterns zeta cell suggest that this cell type corresponds to the ON-OFF phasic W cells known from physiological studies. Strong commonalities with similar ganglion cell types in ferret, rabbit, and monkey suggest that zeta-like cells may be a universal feature of the mammalian retina.
