abbr. UACL. This term has been proposed by Wright et al (1990) to describe a cell lineage of defined phenotype that arises within gastrointestinal epithelia exposed to acid hypersecretion. These cells share some features with other cell lineages in the gut but do not appear to be the result of metaplasia of known cell types. Wright (1996) has suggested that these cells arise as a primary defense reaction to advance mucosal healing.
