[cell lineages]
this term, or simply, lineage, refers to a group of related cell types the origin of which can be traced to a common precursor cell type. In this sense, the three primary germ layers in the very early embryo (ectoderm, endoderm, and endoderm) constitute early lineages that later in development give rise to different cell types (see for example: hematopoiesis and the different types of precursor cells mentioned there in context). The term lineages, therefore, reflects the developmental history of a differentiated cell with specialised, physiological roles as it develops from an immature precursor cell
