called also extrinsic apoptosis, mitochondria-independent apoptosis. A form of cell death that involves interactions of membrane receptors belonging to the TNF family of proteins, their ligands, and signaling molecules. Many of the proteins involved possess characteristic sequence motifs called death domains and death effector domains. This apoptosis pathway and another pathway involving the participation of mitochondria (type 2 apoptosis) are not isolated from each other but cross-talk exists between these two pathways (see also: cell death).
