(abbr. DD) This domain of approximately 80 amino acids was identified by deletion analysis in the C-terminal intracellular region of the 55 kDa receptor for TNF (TNFR1) (Tartaglia et al, 1993; Boldin et al, 1995; Baker and Reddy, 1996). A similar region with many of the amino acids conserved has been identified in the FAS antigen (see: APO-1). The death domain derives its name from the fact that it is involved in signaling processes ultimately leading to programmed cell death by apoptosis (Feinstein et al, 1995; Hofmann and Tschopp, 1995).
