a term introduced to describe the ability of a soluble receptor (see also: receptor shedding) to bind, in the presence of its ligand, to a signaling component of a multimeric receptor complex (Müllberg et al, 2000). For example, the soluble receptor for IL6, which may be generated either by limited proteolysis or by translation from an alternatively spliced mRNA, can bind to cells that only express the signaling component of the IL6 receptor, gp130, and elicit a biological response (Rose-John S, 2003). A similar situation exists for some IL6 family cytokines that all use gp130 as a signaling component in their receptors (soluble IL11 receptors, soluble CNTF receptors). Soluble gp130
