[shedding]
This term relates to the ability of cells to cleave off the extracellular domain of a cytokine receptor and to release it into the circulation as a soluble product (see also: ectodomain shedding) (Heaney and Golde, 1996, 1998;Fernandez-Botran, 2000). Soluble cytokine receptors (abbr. SCRs) arise by proteolytic cleavage of transmembrane receptors or by utilisation of alternatively spliced receptor mRNAs. The enzymes responsible for receptor shedding are generally referred to as sheddases, and these may cause also the liberation of biologically active intracellular domains.
