tolloid

abbr. Tld. tolloid is an astacin-like metalloproteinase from Drosophila melanogaster (gene: CG6868). It is 41 % identical to BMP1 [Bone morphogenetic protein-1] (Shimell et al, 1991).

Tolloid is required for normal dorsal development, and mutations in tolloid have been shown to cause a partial transformation of dorsal ectoderm into ventral ectoderm (Shimell et al, 1991; Finelli et al, 1994). The null phenotype of tolloid is similar to, but less severe than that of dpp [decapentaplegic].
