Short gastrulation
gene symbol: sog (gene: CG9224). This Drosophila melanogaster gene is related to human Chordin and is functionally homologous to Xenopus Chordin (Itoh and Ohta, 2010). The Short gastrulation protein has been shown to become palmitoylated, which promotes its secretion (Kang and Bier, 2010).
Short gastrulation acts as a negative growth factor that is involved in dorsal-ventral patterning of the fly embryo (Francois et al, 1994). Together with another gene, twisted gastrulation (Tsg), it acts as an antagonist of dpp [Decapentaplegic], a protein belonging to the TGF-beta superfamily
