one of the three primary germ layers forming at the gastrula stage of the developing animal embryo. The other two cell layers are the mesoderm and the endoderm.
The ectoderm is the outermost layer of the developing embryo. Differentiation of ectodermal cells from different parts of the ectodermal cell layer gives rise to a variety of specialized tissues. The development of some of these tissues can be traced back to specialized structures called placodes
