[secretory protein in upper respiratory tracts] This gene has been identified by Di et al (2003). The expression of the encoded secretory protein is induced significantly by all-trans-retinoic acid in primary cultured human tracheobroncheal epithelial cells. spurt is secreted onto the apical side of primary human airway epithelial cultures and is present in clinical sputum samples. spurt gene expression is higher in sputum and tissue samples obtained from patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. The protein is identical with SPLUNC-1 (see: PLUNC) and may play a role in innate immunity.
