These cells are the common precursor cells that form contractile muscle cells found in skeletal muscle fibers (see also: skeletal muscle cells), in the heart (cardiac myocytes, or cardiomyocytes) and in smooth muscle such as those surrounding blood vessels (vascular myocytes; see: smooth muscle cells). Myoblasts are the transit-amplifying cell compartment of skeletal muscle.
