Tapon et al (2002) have identified the Drosophila melanogaster protein salvador, encoded by gene CG33193, in a screen for mutations that result in excessive cell proliferation and tissue overgrowth. The protein contains two WW domains. Expression of salvador promotes both cell cycle exit (through affecting levels of Cyclin E) and cell death by apoptosis. Delayed apoptosis probably is the result of a concommitant overexpression of the apoptosis inhibitor DIAP1 caused by the absence of salvador.
