[response element, responsive element, responsive elements]
abbr. RE. A term denoting short sequence regions in the regulatory regions of genes. These sequences are binding sites for nuclear transcription factors that regulate gene expression. Some such sequences consist of multiple and sometimes overlapping binding sites for DNA binding factors and are referred to as MRE [multiresponse elements].
