[IL6 responsive element] A short nucleotide sequence (CTGGGA) found in the promoter region of genes the expression of which is modulated by IL6. It is the binding protein for nuclear proteins (see: C/EBP-beta) that function as transcription factors and control the expression of these genes in response to an IL6 stimulus. Such IL6-specific elements have been found in a number of genes encoding acute phase proteins (for example, Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, Haptoglobin, hemopexin, C-reactive protein; see also: acute phase reaction). See also: Response elements.
