[reproductive death]
This term pertains to cell death that occurs after one or more cell divisions following an insult such as radiation or treatment with carcinogens or mutagens. It is observed in actively proliferating cells, involves cell cycle alterations, and is accompanied usually with the occurrence of double strand breaks and the resultant loss of clonogenicity. This type of cell death has been referred to also as postmitotic apoptosis (Shinomiya, 2001) (see also: interphase cell death). The cytotoxicity of microtubule inhibitors, which induce mitotic arrest by activating the spindle checkpoint and eventually cause cytotoxicity, and the resultant cell death have been described as reproductive death (Mollinedo and Gajate, 2003).
