Gene symbol rpr (gene CG4319). This is a Drosophila melanogaster cell death protein (Hay et al, 1995). The protein contains an RHG motif.
Expression of the reaper gene correlates with the initiation of apoptosis in Drosophila melanogaster. Expression of reaper in the developing Drosophila melanogaster eye results in a small eye owing to excess cell death. Transient expression of reaper in an insect cell cell line also induces cell death by apoptosis. reaper induced apoptosis is blocked by expression of crmA
