Placental bikunin has been purified as an endogenous soluble protein from human placenta as a protein that inhibits trypsin, plasma kallikrein, and plasmin. The corresponding cDNA has been cloned by using information from an expressed sequence tag data base in search of potential new members of the Kunitz family of serine protease inhibitors (Marlor et al, 1997). Delaria et al (1997) have shown that placental bikunin strongly inhibits a number of serine proteases involved in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis (human plasmin, tissue kallikrein, plasma kallikrein, factor XIa) and is a weaker inhibitor of factor VIIa - tissue factor, factor IXa,
