This term refers to multicellular aggregates obtained from osteoblasts or osteosarcomas, which have been shown to be enriched for cancer stem cells, with expression of SOX2 maintining the self-renewal capacity of these cells (Basu-Roy et al, 2010, 2012). See also: sphere forming assay.
