[SRY box 2; sex determining region Y box 2] also: SRY-related HMG box gene 2. SOX2 (317 amino acids) (Stevanovic et al, 1994) is encoded by a highly conserved single-exon gene. The protein is a member of a family of transcription factors named after SRY [sex-determining region Y] and contains a characteristic HMG box. SOX2 activity has been shown to be associated with the promoter region of 7 % of protein-coding genes in human embryonic stem cells (Boyer et al, 2005).
