This term has been used to describe a subpopulation of stem cells that constitute a minor fraction of CD34(+) cells in peripheral blood. The cells express the marker spectrum CD34(+), CD133(+), CD33(low), CD38(low), express low levels of MHC-II, and express also CXCR4 (SDF-1 receptor) and met (HGF receptor) (Zuba-Surma et al, 2008). RT-PCR-based gene expression analysis shows that these cells express mRNA for several early developmental markers consistent with muscle, liver, pancreas, heart, and neural differentiation as well as hematopoietic commitment.
