The activated met (c-met) gene is a proto-oncogene detected originally in a human cell line that had been transformed by exposure to N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. c-met has been found to be overexpressed in some primary human colorectal carcinomas. c-met mRNA is expressed predominantly in epithelial cells, but has been detected in several murine lines of hematopoietic progenitor cells, suggesting that met might function during Hematopoiesis.
The gene maps to human chromosome 7q21-q31. This is also a region associated with nonrandom chromosomal deletions observed in a portion of patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. The
