obestatin

Obestatin is a conserved peptide of 23 amino acids with the sequence (FNAPFDVGIKLSGVQYQQHSQALamide). It is sometimes referred to as obestatin(1-23). The peptide is encoded in the coding sequence of the ghrelin gene (Zhang et al, 2005). Unlike ghrelin, this peptide suppresses food intake, jejunal contraction and decreases body weight gain.

This peptide binds to GPR39, an orphan receptor for which the ligand was unknown. There has been some controversy regarding GPR39 as a receptor for Obestatin (Chartrel et al, 2007; Holst et al, 2007; Lauwers et al, 2006), but Zhang et al (2008) have restated that obestatin is capable of binding to GPR39.
