Ghrelin, termed also Ghrelin-28, is a hormone of 28 amino acids (GSSFLSPEHQRVQQRKESKKPPAKLQPR) with an octanoyl group on Ser(3) that is crucial for its biological activity. This modification is essential for receptor binding (Kojima et al, 1999). n-octanoylated ghrelin (acyl ghrelin) is known as active ghrelin (Kojima and Kangawa, 2005).
