a general term used to refer to the standard form of a given cell type to contrast it to variants, which may differ from the standard form by shape or other parameters. The term is used frequently to describe the standard shape forms of red blood cells (see: discocytes) to distinguish them from various other shape forms. These cells also contain normal concentrations of hemoglobin (see also: normochromic erythrocytes).
