[Neuropeptide-like protein 29] This infection-inducible Caenorhabditis elegans protein (Couillault et al, 2004) is a member of a much larger family of infection-induced proteins (Nathoo et al, 2001). It is thought to be involved in innate immunity as an antimicrobial peptide and may have activities also as a neuropeptide, the precursor protein being processed into at least four amidated peptides QWGYGGYamide, GYGGYGGYamide, GMYGGYamide, GMYGGWamide, some of which are generated also by the related nlp-31.
Troemel et al (2006) have reported that nlp-29 expression is upregulated in response to Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.
