neuroepithelial bodies
abbr. NEBs. This term (also: pulmonary neuroepithelial bodies) refers to highly specialized and extensively innervated groups of neuroendocrine cells found in the epithelium of intrapulmonary airways in many species (Adriaensen et al, 2006). A single neuroepithelial body can be contacted selectively by multiple nerve fiber populations but none of the nerve fiber populations characterized so far contacts all pulmonary neuroepithelial bodies (Brouns et al, 2009).
