This term (also: programmed necrosis, regulated necrosis) has been used to distinguish stimulus-dependent necrosis that proceeds in the absence of caspase activation from those necrotic events induced by nonspecific traumas (e.g., heat shock) or secondary necrosis induced as a consequence of cell death by apoptosis. In several experimental models, programmed necrosis/necroptosis has been shown to be a crucial control point for pathogen- or injury-induced inflammation (Challa and Chan, 2010).
