also: necroapoptotic cell death; also but rarely, apoptonecrosis; this collective term used in some publications refers to mechanisms of regulated cell death that may involve either classical apoptosis or necroptosis. Both cell death phenomena share many initiating factors and signaling pathways and may not be easily distinguished from one another and may have been used because detailed studies allowing a distinction between these two cell death modes were not performed.
