This term pertains to cell death that differs from accidental cell death characterized by cellular swelling and rapid breakdown of the plasma membrane in that coordinate gene expression is required for its execution. Cells undergoing regulated cell death also take an active role in their own engulfment by phagocytic cells by expressing a variety of secreted find-me signals and eat-me signals exposed on the cell surface. Viable cells lack these signals and may express don't-eat-me signals.
