This term usually refers to B-cells or T-cells (sometimes abbr. TN cells) or their undifferentiated precursor cells that have not yet been exposed to antigens. Frequently, such cells are being referred to also as virgin cells (i.e., virgin B-cells, virgin T-cells).
Naive T-cells become memory cells after exposure to antigens. Naive B-cells become plasma cells that are capable of producing antibodies directed against the antigen.
Depending upon context, the term may be used also for cells that have not yet undergone cell activation
