[mitochondrial DNAs]
abbr. mtDNA. Extracellular mitochondrial DNA and fragments have been reported to act as a DAMP [damage-associated molecular pattern] (Krysko et al, 2011) (for comparison see also: DNA, Extracellular RNAs). This DNA and fragments derived thereof can cause inflammatory responses to injury. It can activate neutrophils through the TLR9 pattern recognition receptor, promoting Ca(2+) flux and phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases, thus leading to neutrophil migration and degranulation in vitro and in vivo (Zhang Q et al, 2010).
