[midkine-a; midkine-related growth factor a] This is one of two midkine paralogs found in zebrafish. The second paralog is mdkb [midkine-b; midkine-related growth factor b], which is known also as Mdk2 [midkine-2]. The two proteins share 68 % amino acid identity and are likely to have resulted from a genome duplication event during the evolution of teleosts (Winkler et al, 2003).
In the embryonic and larval retina, mdka and mdkb are expressed in stem cells, retinal progenitor cells, and neurons
