abbr. MK (a term with multiple meanings); approved gene symbol: MDK. A murine gene the expression of which is observed in mid-gestation of embryonic development. MK is expressed also at high levels in both embryonal carcinoma and pluripotential embryonic stem cells and their differentiated derivatives (Tomomura et al, 1990). The gene was identified originally as a gene overexpressed in these cells in response to treatment with retinoic acid (Kadomatsu et al, 1988; Raulais et al, 1991). Kadomatsu et al (1988) referred to the cDNA cloned by them as MK1 [midgestation and kidney protein].
Human midkine is identical with NEGF-2 (
