[marginal zone macrophage]
abbr. MZMs [MZ macrophages]. This cell type constitutes a special subset of tissue-resident splenic macrophages situated at the outer boundary of the marginal zone of the spleen adjacent to the red pulp (for overview see: Kraal, 1992). Based on the expression of a large variety of pathogen receptor molecules, these specialized macrophages, like marginal metallophilic macrophages, play a role in clearing pathogens from the systemic circulation (for overview see: Borges da Silva, 2015).
