this collective term refers to structurally and functionally diverse cell surface receptors expressed predominantly by myeloid cells that typically bind multiple ligands and promote the removal of nonself or altered-self targets. They often function by mechanisms that include endocytosis, phagocytosis, adhesion, and signaling that ultimately lead to the elimination of degraded or harmful substances (for overview see: PrabhuDas et al, 2017).
Among other things, scavenger receptors play a role in immunity (Canton et al, 2013), dendritic cell functions (for overview see: Wang D et al, 2015), B-cell functions and autoimmunity (Jordö et al, 2011), the removal of apoptotic cells (for overview see: Penberthy and Ravichandran, 2016), as well as cancer biology (Yu X et al, 2015) .
