This is a general term for erythrocytes with a size that is noticeably larger than those of normal erythrocytes (Pribush et al, 1995; Coopersmith and Ingram, 1969) (see also: discocytes). A discrimination between normally and abnormally sized may be difficult (Haun et al, 2002). Hypochromic macrocytes are large cells with a reduced hemoglobin content.
Most commonly increased numbers of such enlarged cells are caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, and reticulocytosis (Ward, 1979).
