These very long and thin differentiated cells with hexagonal cross-sectional profiles that facilitate regular packing (Kuszak, 1995) make up the bulk of the vertebrate eye lens, forming concentrically arranged layers around the anterior-posterior polar axis. Their convex curvature contributes to the spheroidal shape of the lens.
Lens fiber cells develop from slow cycling lens epithelial cells which have stem cell characteristics (Boulton and Albon, 2004; Bhat, 2001). Lens fiber cells lack organelles and a nucleus (Wride, 2011; Bassnett S, 2009), which removes sources of light scattering, and contain high concentrations
