Lactaptin has been identified as a proteolytic fragment of human kappa-casein and corresponds to casein-kappa(57-134) (kappa-casein(57-134)) of casein-kappa (Nekipelaya et al, 2008). Lactaptin acts as an anticancer peptide. Semenov et al (2010) have shown that induces cell death by apoptosis in cultured human MCF-7 adenocarcinoma cells in a process involving caspase-7 activation. It also reduces the viability of A549 and Hep-2 cells without causing apoptosis. Non-malignant human mesenchymal stem cells are completely resistant to lactaptin action.
