This kind of injury is characterised by tissue damage as a result of hypoxia caused by severely decreased, or completely arrested, blood flow, which is characterized by an increase in oxidative stress and nitrosative stress involving the generation of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, respectively (for overview see: Gielis etr al, 2017).
