This term refers to a cell type with features of hepatocytes obtained through reprogramming of somatic cells, i. e., their conversion into hepatocyte-like cells (see also: transdifferentiation), by introduction of various reprogramming factors such as Hnf4a along with Foxa1, Foxa2, or Foxa3 into murine fibroblasts (Sekiya and Suzuk, 2011) or GATA-4, Hnf1a, and Foxa3 into murine fibroblasts (Huang et al, 2011; Kim et al, 2015). The technique has been used also to generate hepatocyte-like cells from human fibroblasts
