These cells are distributed uniformly on the vitreous surface of the retinal inner limiting membrane. The surface morphology of hyalocytes indicates that the cells are wandering macrophages (Ogawa, 2002) (for review see also: Sakamoto and Ishibashi, 2011; for an older review of macrophage-like properties of hyalocytes see: Boltz-Nitulescu et al, 1979; for historical reviews see also: Szirmay and Balazs, 1968; Hamburg, 1959). Hyalocytes are being referred to also as vitreous macrophages or vitreal cells (Balazs et al, 1980). There may be distinct subpopulations (Sommer et al, 2009).
