gp41

[HIV1 gp41] This glycoprotein coats the envelope of HIV1 together with gp120. Both proteins enable the virus to bind, fuse, and infect susceptible host cells. gp41 has been implicated also in immunosuppressive cytokine production (Bloch et al, 2007; Morozov et al, 2012) and the induction of apoptosis (Garg and Blumenthal, 2008).


Synthetic peptides derived from the ectodomain of gp41 have been shown to be chemotactic agonists for the formyl peptide receptor FPRL1 [formyl peptide receptor-like-1], inducing chemotaxis in monocytes and neutrophils (Le Y et al, 2000; de Paulis et al, 2002; Su S et al, 1999).
