[HIV1 gp120] gp120 is the viral coat protein responsible for HIV1 entry. When gp120 binds to CD4, it undergoes a series of structural changes that allows it to interact with receptors of chemokines (CCR5 and CXCR4), which function as co-receptors. Receptor binding eventually triggers conformational changes in another viral protein, gp41, which result in the formation of a fusion active molecule to attack the cell membrane. gp120 is shed from infected cells and thus can interact with distant uninfected cells. For abioactive fragment of gp120 see also: EDAF [Env-derived antiviral factor].
