[Growth arrest-specific gene-1] gas-1 is one of the growth arrest-specific genes identified in quiescent, serum-starved NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts (see: gas genes).
Gas-1 is an integral, glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-anchored plasma membrane protein (Stebel et al, 2000). gas-1 is not expressed in growing or transformed cells. Overexpression of gas-1 in quiescent cells inhibits the serum induced transition from the G0 to the S phase of the cell cycle without affecting the normal early serum response.
